After WW1 land
controlled by the Ottomen Turks was taken over by the British, who invented the
kingdom of Jordan [TransJordan] with 70% of the area under the ruling class of Hashemites. The rest of the land was to be divided into a Jewish and and an Arab state. This United Nations proposed a two state partition which was rejected by
the Arabs resulting in several nations attacking Israel unsuccessfully and
losing much of the contested land. Many Palestinians lived then and continue to
live now as Jordanian citizens. In 1967 many countries again tried to destroy
Israel and failed losing the Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip and control of
the West Bank, displacing many more Palestinians, most fleeing to Jordan. The
largest number of Palestinians refugees moved to Jodan and make up 60% to more
probably 80% of Jordanians even today. The Fatah of the PLO set up a state
within a state inside Jordan, attempting with Syrian help to overthrow the
government and tried several times to kill king Hussein of Jordan
himself. Syria began invading Jordan (200 tanks "disguised" as
PLO Army tanks?) but they turned back after Jordanian air force attacks (and
the threat of other nations supporting Jordan-different countries tell
different stories about this) and In 1970 King Hussein moved to crush Palestinian
Organizations and restore monarchy rule. Thousands were killed, mostly
Palestinians, chasing the PLO and many Palestinians out of Jordan into
Lebanon. The PLO's instigated Jordanian civil war which resulted in the
PLO being purged from Jordan is rarely mentioned but the effects still resonate
in the Middle East. The cost of the failed attacks against Israel and the
failed coup against the Jordanian Monarchy is still being paid by the
Palestinians and that is not going to change. Elections have a price and
so does failure in warfare. Israel is not going away and despite the
currently weak support by the Obama administration for this Mid East democracy
if threatened with extinction Israel has the ability to take much of the region
down with them. Strengthening the enemies of Israel does not make the world
safer. It would appear the real Palestinian state would be and has been
the nation of Jordan except the ruling class of Hashemites of Jordan have
successfully contested that claim.
